- Effectiveness of Foreign languages and Pictograms in Signs
- サインにおける外国語表記とピクトグラムの有効性について
Abstract
Signs with high necessity for foreigners had better be described in not only Japanese and English but also Chinese and Hangul. However in signs that are described in four languages, each character is small, and the readability of the whole declines extremely. Therefore, we experimented on the optimal number of languages in signs and the effectiveness of pictograms. As a result, after all, the readability of signs in two languages was significantly high for Japanese and English native speakers than that in four languages. And for Hangul native speakers, the readability did not decline in two languages, because English is effective for non-native speakers too. The effectiveness of pictograms, however, was not obvious in this experiment.
