We have generated subpicosecond vacuum ultravaiolet (VUV) seed pulse at 126 nm by the nonlinear wavelength conversion of a Ti:Sapphire laser at 882 nm. The seventh harmonic radiation centered at 126 nm was observed in low-pressure Ar, Kr and Xe gases. The highest harmonic intensity was achieved using a Xe with a pressure of 2.5 Torr. The spectral bandwidths were less than 2 nm. The low-energy subpicosecond VUV seed pulse generated by the harmonic conversion could be effectively amplified in an argon excimer amplifier at 126 nm.
