Abstract

"What is true wealth, and what is real human life? In the past, human activity was done on subsistence level, thus always in harmony with nature. Nowadays, however, we've been indulged with the all the capitalistic luxuries, and as a result, endogenous and vernacular activities are now increasingly lost. The "Asobi-shigoto" is regarded as an example of such subsistence activities, and is an attempt to re-examine its original meaning. Asobi-shigoto or 'minor subsistence', as its name suggests, encompasses activities such as catching wild games (fish, octopus, rabbit, or even wild boar) by using primitive and traditional way. The author believe that this Asobi-shigoto is an important activity in creating mutual symbiosis between man and nature."
