Extracellular Electron Transport Scarcely Accumulates Proton Motive Force in Shewanella oneidensis MR-1

<jats:title>Abstract</jats:title> <jats:p>Periplasmic pH (pHp) was monitored by an in vivo assay that was developed for Shewanella oneidensis MR-1 based on the outer membrane permeability of a biosynthesized flavin molecule. The pHp data obtained by this method suggest that proton motive force is not generated during anaerobic respiration associated with either intracellular fumarate reduction or extracellular electron transport to electrodes.</jats:p>
