Abstract

Viscous fluids with high thixotropy were applied to the surface of a notched steel plate specimen, and the effects of the fluids on visual detection of fatigue crack growth were examined by performing fatigue crack growth tests. Two kinds of silicone grease with different viscosities and a mixture of silicone grease and silicone oil were used as the viscous fluids. When the fluids with relatively low viscosity were applied, obvious "caves" in them were formed along the fatigue crack paths. The lengths of these fluid caves were also well correlated with the actual crack lengths. These observations facilitated the visual crack detection. The apparent viscosity of the fluids was also measured in order to estimate their thixotropy.
