Abstract
The elderly in Junseien nursing home started taking fermented milk products daily (probiotic fermented milk drink four times and yogurt three times a week) to improve quality of life from September 2009. Using a database on health condition and bowel habit in the elderly, we analyzed the efficacy of fermented milk products by comparing the data before and after their intake. The average number of bowel movements after intake increased significantly from 27.1 to 32.8 times a month (p<0.001). The frequency of use of suppositories decreased from 22.6 to 14.5 times a year (p<0.001), and that of enemas also decreased from 7.0 to 4.7 times a year (p=0.03). Regarding health condition, we observed a decrease in frequency and duration of fever, but it was not significant. In conclusion, continuous intake of fermented milk products was shown to be beneficial in the elderly in terms of increased bowel movements and decreased frequency of use of suppositories and enemas.
