Abstract

In recent years, the number of patients with taste disorder has increased. The causes of taste disorder are diverse and there is no consensus on the treatment. Especially, treatments for idiopathic taste disorder often cause problems. We reported that there was a relationship between taste alteration and water metabolism. We investigated the clinical usefulness of Poria powder with five herbs and Kidney-Qi pill, both of which regulate water metabolism in taste disorders caused by water dysbolism.
The participants were 45 patients who were diagnosed as having taste disorders caused by water dysbolism, and who had visited other medical institutions.
The data was collected using self-administered questionnaires and oral cavity diagnosis. The questions on the self-administered questionnaire included the patient’s age, chief complaint, medical institutions visited before visiting our office, methods of treatment received, and oral/general conditions. We diagnosed patients who had edema of tongue and/or tooth mark, edema of body, headache and joint pain during bad weather as taste disorder caused by water dysbolism. We prescribed Poria powder with five herbs or Kidney-Qi pill for taste disorder with water dysbolism, and investigated the effects of the medicine for taste disorder with water dysbolism.
The symptom of taste disorder improved for 41 patients, 21 of whom were completely cured. This result suggests that Kampo medicine that regulates water metabolism is useful for taste disorder caused by water dysbolism. We need to assess the physical constitution of each patient, and choose a suitable treatment accordingly.
