After studying about staple foods, main dishes and side dishes, guidance was provided to 27 sixth graders at an elementary school in Osaka City to promote the practice of combining staple foods, main dishes and side dishes for breakfast. The educational effects were examined from the descriptive content of worksheets used in the lesson, self-monitoring after the guidance, and pre- and post-surveys. The following results were obtained.
(1)A meal balance check by computer using the Japanese Food Guide Spinning Top was effective in reviewing the way of eating staple foods, main dishes and side dishes.
(2)As a result of understanding that eating a breakfast with staple foods, main dishes and side dishes is important and setting the goal of thinking of combinations of staple foods, main dishes and side dishes for breakfast, significant improvement in the content of breakfast was observed.
(3)In the pre-survey, although about 70% were aware of and largely understood staple foods, more than half did not know about main dishes and side dishes, and the level of understanding was low. In the post-survey two months later, both the level of awareness and level of understanding had significantly improved.
(4)In the post-survey, only about half were conscious of combining staple foods, main dishes and side dishes at breakfast, which suggests the need for continued approach to awareness of meal balance.
