Abstract

The area and value of Public Real Estate (PRE) in Japan is estimated to 40.7% of the country area, and 454 trillion yen, attaining large proportions. Therefore, it is necessary for central and local governments to manage PRE effectively and efficiently. The purpose of this article is to compare Japan and the UK and explain the issues on PRE management in Japan. In the UK, the central government places PRE strategy with one of the important policies and sets more concrete numerical targets. In Japan, local governments mainly implement PRE strategy, and concentrate on the reduction of real estate cost and the disposal of surplus PRE. The Japanese government needs to play an important role in PRE management and recognize it as the major strategy in implementing administrative activities.
