Abstract

In the recent years, the significance of the compact city is highlighted. However, the development of the compact city is not only related to the administration induction but also among residents preference. The location of residence and workplace is related as it affects an individual's life-style. This study investigates the relationship between the selection of residence and workplace by looking at the lifestyle using a large-scale questionnaire survey in Tokyo Metropolitan area. We found that many people hope to live and work in the same city in the coming 20 years. As for people who hope to live in the central area, women value proximity to shops and hospitals, and level of service in train/bus and walkability. Independent from residence and workplace, young people do not value proximity to parks and natural resources.
