Abstract
In “machizukuri” which has been popular with various kinds of citizens’ movements or residents’ collaboration with local government, it is important that various actors can participate in the building up of local rules, their application, and their improvement. This study focused on local rules for the use of public street spaces in Shimokitazawa district, Tokyo. We analyzed the spatial and physical aspects of the private use of public spaces as an extention of private spaces for displaying commodities and signboards. We also analyzed the social aspects of that use, such as various actors' consciousness of street spaces as public or common spaces (sometimes, one actor's consciousness can be opposite to others) and various kinds of collaborative activity among those actors. Finally, we clarified the structural relationship of local rules among various kinds of actors, their consciousness, and their activity.
