Abstract

Objective: This study aimed to clarify the factors supporting the resilience of primary breast cancer patients who had undergone surgery.
Methods: The three participants were female breast cancer patients who had undergone outpatient surgery. Semistructured interviews were conducted 7-11 months after the surgery. Qualitative data were analyzed by the descriptive phenomenological method developed by Giorgi.
Results: There were four factors supporting the resilience of primary breast cancer patients who had undergone surgery. They were: (1) to get information about breast cancer and its treatment before the diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer, (2) to believe their own personality and sense of values and their environment including relations with other people, (3) to take a hopeful view of breast cancer, and (4) interactive relation between them and others close to them including family members and medical personnel.
Conclusion: In nursing care of breast cancer patients, we suggest providing accurate information about breast cancer and its treatment before the diagnosis and treatment, respecting each patient's personality and sense of values.
