Abstract

In this general statement, we focus on standardization of terminology on dental and oral-facial surgery fields, and drilling down into its history and actual status with clinical examples. We also make mention of an international circumstance of electronic data exchange for dental information and other epidemiological indexes to lead the reader to understand the actual status in Japan. Saito et al. published the standard disease name master for Japanese dental treatment in 2002. This master was released with extensive expression codes for teeth positions and their actual statuses. These codes comply with Japanese insurance claims and deliver advantages than other international standard codes for teeth positions. By adopting the codes, we are able to express the details of teeth positions completely even though they were in artificial conditions such as wearing dentures or dental bridges. In dental fields, tooth position is seen as an integrated part of disease name, we authors have expectations for readers to understand this importance of the codes.
