This study aimed to clarify constituent factors of nursing professionals' roles and understanding in long-term health care facilities for the elderly (referred to below as elderly care facilities). The study also sought to obtain the insights of nursing professionals by examining the relationship between their sense of job being worthwhile and will to continue work. This research was undertaken with a view towards improving educational support for nursing professionals. A self-administered anonymous questionnaire, distributed to nursing professionals in elderly care facilities, obtained 6 factors of nursing professionals' role and understanding: "facilitating return-home arrangements"; "coordination and collaboration among different professions and family caregivers"; "readiness as a nurse employed in an elderly care facility"; "medical knowledge and skills"; "practical nursing skills for raising quality of life of elderly people"; and "interaction that protects dignity of the elderly". There were relations between improvement in the 6 factors and nursing professionals' sense of job being worthwhile and will to continue work. However, it was clear that nursing professionals' self-evaluation was lowest on the key role of "facilitating return-home arrangements", indicating one direction for educational support for nursing professionals in elderly care facilities.
