Abstract

Nonverbal messages such as smile and direction of sight in facial expression play an important role in nursing communication. We have already developed a nursing communication education support system via embodied avatars called Virtual Actor(VA), however these avatars do not have the function of facial expressions. In this paper, an advanced nursing communication education support system via embodied avatars with smile and eyeball movement model was developed. In order to verify the effectiveness of the system, we examined a role-playing communication experiment. We prepared three modes as a system mode for the experiment. In mode A, VA was always expressionless. In mode B, VA only used the smile model. In mode C, VA used the smile and eyeball movement model. The result of the experiment showed that mode C, “with smile and eyeball movement model”, was evaluated most affirmatively. In the free description, there were many opinions to notice effects of facial expression and direction of sight on communication. Thus the effectiveness of the nursing communication education support system was demonstrated.
