Abstract
The mechanisms of the short-period variability of the bifurcation current “Friwakecho” were investigaeted using high-frequency ocean surface radar observation data, water temperature records, wind data, and sea level records. Statistical analysis of the data indicated that the variability of the bifurcation was highly coherent with wind veloticy field fluctuations, lagging about 90 degrees. In the west-northwestward winds dominated regiem, the Kuroshio front approached the southwestern coast of the Kii Peninsula, and then the bifurcation current strengthend. When east-southeasteward winds dominated in and around the Kii Channel, the Kuroshio front or the bifurcation current moved offshore about 15 km, weakening/ ending the bifurcation current.
