Abstract

I have investigated the availability of liquid crystals as crystalline organic semiconductors and their organic transistor application. It is easy to control the alignment of molecules and direction of grain of grain boun dary in crystalline thin films by using liquid crystal phase. And the polycrystalline thin films fabricated by solution process utilizing liquid crystalline thin films as precursor are quite uniform because of their liquid like nature. The developed liquid crystalline phenyl-benzothienobenzothiophene derivative has highly ordered liquid crystal phase, which helps to realize the good solubility and high thermal stability. The crystalline thin film shows high FET mobility over 10cm2/Vs and the small variation of mobility. It is concluded that the liquid crystalline materials are recognized as quality organic thin film transistor materials.
