Abstract

Assisted reproductive technology (ARTs) such as artificial insemination with donor's semen (AID), egg donation, in vitro fertilization –embryo transfer (IVF-ET), surrogate birth and so on, have been developed and applied to people who wish to have a baby in Japan, although the laws remain inadequate. To date, few reports have been published demonstrating consciousness of the Japanese for ART. In particular, there are no reports which discuss the difference in consciousness for ART between medical students and general students to own knowledge. In this paper, we studied the difference in consciousness between medical students and general students regarding AID, egg donation, surrogate birth by host mother with IVF-ET using husband's semen and wife's ovum, and surrogate birth by surrogate mother with intrauterine insemination by husband's semen. The results of an opinion poll for the ART were compared between the two groups of students. The data obtained were statistically analyzed regarding the field of specialty. The similarities and differences were examined with the chi-squared test. General students held the opinion of “disagree” more frequently than medical students when gamate donation on surrogate birth was requested to themselves. However, no significant differences were found for all four techniques between medical students and general students when ART was considered with generalizations. More than seventy percent of both students approved AID, egg donation and surrogate birth by host mother, but more than forty percent of both groups of students disapproved surrogate birth by surrogate mother with intrauterine insemination by husband's semen. From the results obtained, we would like to propose legislation for AID, egg donation, and surrogate birth by host mother with IVF-ET using husband's semen and wife's ovum.
