Abstract

The objective of the present study was to describe the experiences and thoughts regarding work continuation of two individuals with early-onset dementia, specifically one with mild and one with severe cognitive decline. Semi-structured interviews were conducted on the individuals with early-onset dementia, who were working at an employment support facility, and their families, and information was also collected from participant observation and records. Based on the results, the following five headings were obtained for Mr. A: "reluctance to inform others of the disease name" , "make use of specialty" , "work while receiving subtle support" , "the joy of being able to put effort into work despite having a disease" , and "desire enhancement of social system" . For Mr. B. the following eight headings were obtained: "lack of conversations with wife" , "confusion caused by cognitive decline" , "work while receiving constant support" , "work silently and independently" , "earnestness toward work" , "work together with others" , "acceptance of treatment at work" , and "misunderstanding resulting from memory impairment" . <br>These findings indicate a phenomenon in which individuals with severe cognitive decline, as well as those with mild dementia, continue to have a desire to work, and are able to continue work given the appropriate support.
