Abstract

This study examines the meanings of an exchange program for Japanese high school students who learn Korean language, and Korean high school students who learn Japanese language using Grounded Theory. There are some similarities in both Japanese and Korean language teaching curricula including their Aims and Methods. Both curricula aim to raise communicative and intercultural competence, and the methods focus on conducting learner-centered class activities. In this study an exchange program for Japanese and Korean students was designed based on these similarities, followed by a survey and interviews with the participants, the results of which were analyzed with Grounded Theory, a qualitative research methodology. The data gathered were classified with a core category Existence of Peers, and also with three categories: ‘a hands-on feeling of learning'; ‘development of learning'; and ‘construction of human relationships'. In addition, 13 small categories were sub-categorized under these three categories. The findings suggest this type of an exchange program could heighten the awareness of the existence of peers, improving motivations for language learning and cultural learning, and stimulating participation in interactional activities.
