Direct Adhesion of Dissimilar Materials Using Sonogashira Cross-coupling Reaction

Abstract

<p>Adhesion between dissimilar materials is an important issue in materials technologies. The bond formation between dissimilar materials should be effective to achieve adhesion between the materials. Herein, we conduct the direct adhesion of materials using the Sonogashira cross-coupling reaction. Polystyrene gel modified with iodoaryl group (I-Sty gel) selectively adhered to the polystyrene gel with an ethynyl group (E-Sty gel) using the Sonogashira cross-coupling reaction. The I-Sty gel was also found to adhere selectively to the glass substrate with the ethynyl group. The adhesion strengths depend on the ratio of the functional groups in gels. These results indicate that Sonogashira cross-coupling reaction can be used for direct adhesion between dissimilar materials.</p>
