<jats:title>Abstract</jats:title> <jats:p>The reactions of O(3P) atoms with furan, 2-methylfuran (2-MF), and 2,5-dimethylfuran (2,5-DMF) were studied at elevated temperatures by using a shock tube technique coupled with atomic resonance absorption spectroscopy (ARAS). The rate coefficients (k) determined from the time profiles of O(3P) atoms were expressed by the relation of kO+2,5-DMF &gt; kO+2-MF &gt; kO+FURAN. The molecular orbital calculations with CBS-QB3 level were also performed and the possible product channels of these reactions were discussed.</jats:p>
