- An Attempt of New Style of Ethnography
Abstract

Intensive fieldworks on revitalization movements were carried out in two communities characterized by rapid depopulation and aging to illuminate what aspects had been overlooked and propose new ways of movement including transmission of information. For this purpose, a new style of ethnography was attempted in which concrete description was provided concerning not only personal opinions of participants in the movements but life history and personal impressions the author had at each point of time.
Four points were suggested as following. First, participation in the movement was taken as an attempt to pursue individual well-being by residents who had been involved in the movement, which was hardly represented numerically. Second, the movement was found to be a process in which sense of the irreplaceable was grown among the participants. Third, the merger and integration of plural different streams of norm transmission were found to accelerate the movement. Forth, the new style of ethnography could facilitate readers’ vicarious experiences and contribute to self-reflections of the participants.
