Abstract

Credit associations—cooperative financial institution—with more branches outside their headquarter cities may yield greater profits. This paper aims to demonstrate the influences those branch expansions exert on the fiscal performance of credit associations' managements. More specifically, we examine the performance of the credit associations headquartered in Tokai's three prefectures (i.e., Aichi, Gifu, and Mie). We empirically investigate whether having more branches outside their headquarter cities results in greater profits. It is possible that credit associations in the Tokai region as a whole do not have strong profit motivations when they enter other regions. They may, instead, want to support the customers in the regions in which their headquarters are located, which can be easier if credit associations establish their branches in other cities. Thus, they could support customers by providing credit services and enabling their customers to settle accounts with business associates who are in these other cities. In this way, they may be better able to support their customers by entering into such new markets. On the other hand, credit associations whose headquarters are located in more competitive markets may expand into other regions seeking reduced competition and easier profits.
