Abstract

A large number of cars were washed away by the tsunami in the Great East Japan Earthquake, 2011. The driven cars also caused damage to structures. To clarify the characteristics on the movement of the car, we performed a hydraulic model experiment using four different cars types, that is minicar, minivan, and sedan types. The model cars were installed in flow with water rising and were captured the movement tracks by high-speed video cameras. The distance of movement of the model cars were determined by image analysis of Direct Linear Transformation (DLT) method.<br> As a result, the displacement of cars in the direction orthogonal to the flow strongly depended on the gravity center position of the car. Especially, approaching the position toward the front of car, the movement became larger. The motion of cars in the direction of the flow became uniform with the passage of time. And the distance necessary for uniform motion was more than eight times per the car-length. Furthermore, to evaluate the distance, we proposed an exponential function considered the specific gravity of car.
