Waste Generation and Citizen’s Attitude toward Waste Management in Kabul city, Afghanistan

1.    Introduction<br>The citizens of Kabul city, suffer from day by day increasing health risk of illegal open dumping sites.Open dumping sites caused serious environmental issues and health risks in Kabul city such as, dust, filthy dirt, sub and main road blocks, odors, toxic gases from burnt waste, ground water contamination, and outbreak of infectious/insect-borne diseases.The purpose of this research is to manage and optimize the illegal open dumping sites and this article focuses on estimating waste generation quantity including open dumping sites and understanding citizen’s attitudes toward waste<br><b>2.    Methodology<br><b>2.1 Study Area<br>Among the central municipal districts of Kabul city, district 4th is selected as a case study site. <br><b>2.2 Data Collection <br>Two types of data have been collected; quantitative and qualitative data.Quantitative data include average total waste generation rate per day and qualitative data include city map, district boundary map, district block map, community bin location, household questioner result, and interview result.<br>3.    <b>Results<br> the average total generated solid waste at the collection points in the district 4th of Kabul city became 419m3/day with 136 collection sites; 86 open dumping sites.The disposal method of solid waste from households are 40.3% by wheelbarrows, 25.6% by plastic bags, 21.7% by water buckets and 12.4% by trach buckets to the community bin.<br>4.  <b>Conclusion<br>This research found that most households are unsatisfied from this condition and they are ready for buying plastic bags for the proposed door to door motorbike collection system. About 84.5% are ready for this system to reduce illegal open dumping sites around the district and reduce their hazardous impacts.</b></b></b></b></b>
