Atomic and Electronic Structures of Single Oxygen Molecular Junction with Au, Ag and Cu Electrodes

DOI

Abstract

The single molecular junctions have been extensively studied due to their fundamental interest and potential application in nano devices. In this study, the electrical conduction and structures of single oxygen molecular junction with Au, Ag and Cu electrodes were investigated experimentally. Experiments were performed using a mechanically controllable break junction (MCBJ) technique at 10K in an ultrahigh vacuum (UHV). The conductance and stretch length were measured during breaking process, which showed the formation of O_2/Au, Ag, Cu junctions with the features showed in low conductance for Au, Ag contacts while the Cu contacts was observed a stable conductance value around 0.1 G_0_. On the basis of conductance measurement, vibrational spectroscopy and current-voltage (I-V) response of the molecular junctions, we provided experimental evidence that the oxygen incorporated into the metal wires to form single oxygen molecular junctions. Furthermore detailed analysis of the I-V response based on the single channel transport model allowed us to quantitatively evaluate electronic properties of the molecular junctions as metal-molecule electronic couplings and an energy level of a transport channel.
