Abstract

In design, many designers use sketches to generate design ideas. However, design education emphasizes still life drawing skills through the expression of a given object by observations. Although the purpose of sketching and still-life drawing differs, they have similar expression skills; for example, both use perspective methods and shading.
This study aimed to elucidate the relationship between still life drawing and sketching by comparing the differences between drawing skills and the process of drawing multiple subjects. First, still-life drawings and sketches drawn by 10 subjects were evaluated to classify the subjects into three groups: those with excellent still-life drawing skills, those with excellent sketching skills, and others. Then the drawing processes by group were analyzed. The drawing time and process of each element such as drawing lines and shadows varied between the groups. In addition to differences in expression skills, our results suggested that the recognition method of three-dimensional shape influences drawing skills and process of drawing in still life drawings and sketches.
