Abstract

Transport and deposition process of particulate organic matter (POM) on a sand bar is a key in river ecosystem. In vegetated area, the form drag is taken into account, but frictional resistance law is conventionally assumed to the same to flow without vegetation. This paper introduces the concept of bed roughness boundary layer in vegetated area, and based on this concept, not only the velocity distribution but also the suspended sediment concentration profile are discussed. Then, the frictional resistance law for flow in vegetated area is deduced to evaluate the frictional velocity. Furthermore, the kinematic viscosity and the diffusion coefficient of suspended sediment, and the depth-averaged concentration of suspended sediment are discussed to prepare depth-averaged 2D analysis for flow and fluvial processes in streams with vegetation.
