Abstract

With the vitalization of urban tourism in the wake of the Tokyo Olympic Games in 2020 , there is an increasing focus on research about nightlife in Tokyo. This paper clarifies the characteristics of Tokyo's nightlife tourism for young people through the focus on night-time music spaces such as clubs and live music venues and their possibilities for the development of Tokyo's nighttime-economy and nightlife tourism. The legal and statistical definition as well as the current situation of clubs and live music venues is explained, followed by their geographical distribution in Tokyo based on statistical data. These results show that these music venues are concentrated in three wards Shibuya, Shinjuku, and Minato. Especially in Shibuya and Minato, nightlife tours and relating services for inbound tourists to Japan have been established. In addition, with the amendment of the so-called "Entertainment Business Law" (Act on Control and Improvement of Amusement and Entertainment Business) in June 2016 , a reorganization of businesses was expected and eventually confirmed by Shibuya Ward's activities for the promotion of nightlife tourism. This nightlife tourism and relating services may further be developed with aim at the Tokyo Olympic Games.
