Abstract
This study was conducted to clarify the characteristics of distribution and actual conditions of vacant lots utilized for vegetable gardens in an urbanization area in Fukui city. Results show the following major findings. 1) The distribution of vegetable gardens in vacant lots is related to distance from a central railway station, land-use zoning, and land prices. 2) Vegetable gardens in vacant lots are increasing in built-up areas. The prior land use of some vegetable gardens in vacant lots was for buildings. 3) Of users, more than 70% reside in areas that are not adjacent to vegetable gardens. However, most distances of residences and gardens are short. Life with vegetable gardens supports spiritual abundance and health of users.
