Educational materials that make use of interference colors in metallic oxide film produced by anodic oxidation of titanium have been developed as practical teaching materials for science education. Seminars for teachers on their use have also been reported. However, the anodic oxidation method requires the use of high voltage. In addition, tasks such as waste liquid (phosphoric acid aqueous solution) treatment are required. As a result, there have been almost no reports of actual implementations of the anodic oxidation method as part of practical science education. Within the scope of our investigation, we found mention of interference colors in soap under the topic of “light interference and diffraction”. However, practical learning through interference color experiments that utilize the oxidation film of metals has not been reported.

We discovered that light interference colors can be observed by melting Sn-Zn (85:15 mol%) alloy and subjecting it to atmospheric oxidation. By adjusting the thickness of the metal's oxidation film, the desired interference colors can be logically reproduced.
