Abstract

The purpose of this paper is to reclassify the daily activities of foreigners living in Japan. To that aim, a factor analysis is conducted on a large-scale questionnaire survey that asked foreigners about the frequencies of activities that they actually undertake within Japanese society (the number of complete questionnaire forms is 908).

The analysis results reveal six factors (Factors 1-6). In contrast with Factors 3-6 relating to activities that only take place in particular circumstances and/or locations, Factors 1 and 2 relate to essential activities regardless of the individual's situation.

The characteristics of activities heavily loaded by Factors 1 and 2 are examined in detail. The results indicate that Factor 1 is related to private activities that are necessary to survive within Japanese society, while Factor 2 is related to public activities that are necessary for achieving good communications with others. Moreover, the Japanese language learning level of individual respondents was found to be highly correlated with Factor 1 scores, but not so highly correlated with Factor 2 scores. These findings suggest that the frequencies of activities heavily loaded by Factor 2 are strongly influenced by the respondent's occupation and status in society.
