Abstract

Customer needs and demands have got increased and diversified in recent years. In order to meet these demands and to ensure company profits, it is required to establish a flexible production organization by efficiently rearranging and employing the production resources of a whole factory. This factor is recognized and research on the realization of a production system of the next generation is being conducted in IMS (Intelligent Manufacturing System) project, NGMS II (Next Generation Manufacturing Systems II-Synergistic Integration of Distributed Manufacturing and Enterprise Information, International Number: 95002). In this paper, the authors arrange the flow of information processing in the factory design to “Horizontal Design Flow” and “Vertical Design Flow”, and propose a factory design system that supports the stepwise design process from the entire factory to production lines, cells and equipments. The factory model is represented by a hierarchical network structure composed of entity, interface, attribute, and constraint network. The designer can easily design and evaluate a factory plan according to the requirement specification and using the evaluation tools, step by step. It supports the trial and error selection of the overall factory design.
