First single-crystal synthesis and low temperature structural determination of the quasi-2D quantum spin compound (CuCl)LaNb2O7

Abstract

We have successfully synthesized the first single crystals of an ion-exchanged layered Dion-Jacobson perovskite. The assembly shows a pseudo-tetragonal lattice with an orthorhombic structure <I>Pbam</I>. The perovskite slabs have octahedral tilting along the <I>a</I> axis, rendering the magnetic layers distort significantly. This new structural model provides clues for a relevant description of its magnetic properties.
