Abstract

We investigated stomach contents of alien largemouth bass and aquatic biota in Lake Shoji, Yamanashi Prefecture during 2008-2009 and compared feeding habits and prey selection of bass among different habitat types within the lake. Bass in sand/gravel area mainly preyed prawn and those in both lava and cobble area preyed a freshwater goby. Furthermore, bass in sand/gravel and cobble area selectively preyed a minnow and bluegill, whereas those fishes were avoided by bass in lava area. Differences of food habits and prey selection of bass was related to both the presence of cover for prey species (e.g. rocks or submersed plants) and foraging strategy of bass.
