This paper reports mechanical stimulation enhance neurite outgrowth of dorsal root ganglion (DRG) cells. DRG cells were cultured on polyethyleneimine and fibronectin coated PDMS chambers for one day. 10% stretch was applied (0.25 Hz, 2 h/day or 4 h/day for 7 days) to DRG cells with a stretch machine. DRG cells are comprised of several types of cells. Only small cells (the dimeter is almost 10μm) have enhanced. Neurites of stimulated DRG cells extended longer than one of no stimulated DRG cells. The result indicates mechanical stimulation is extracellular signal that can neuronal regenerative activities.
