Abstract

<p> This paper presents a novel disk-shaped single-drive bearingless motor. The rotor is actively positioned only in the axial direction whereas it is passively stabilized in the radial and tilting directions. Generally, the rotor shaft length should be larger than the outer diameter for the passive stabilization in the tilting direction. On the other hand, the proposed bearingless motor has a large outer diameter and a short axial length with positive tilting stiffness. In this paper, the novel concept of the new machine structure is presented. In addition, the magnetic suspension force and rotational torque are calculated in three-dimensional finite-element-method analysis.</p>
