Abstract

This paper discusses the exchange of views between Mahatma Gandhi (Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi, 1869–1948) and Rev. Fujii Nichidatsu (Fujii Guruji, 1885–1985), the founder of one of the modern Japanese Nichiren Buddhist sects, Nipponzan Myohoji, over the critiques on modern civilization and colonialism in Asian countries by Britain and Japan. The book Hind-Swaraj, written by Gandhi in 1909, is famous for its radical criticism on modern civilization, and Rev. Fujii quoted this book in his famous street preaching at Nihonbashi, Tokyo, in February 1930. Thereafter, Rev. Fujii left for India to engage in propagation after his evangelist work in China and Japan. Through an analysis of the preaching of Rev. Fujii, this paper shows how he was inspired by Gandhi's views on modern civilization and colonialism in Asian countries, which led to a turning point for the propagation of Fujii's works in India, and then finally led him to have close relations with Gandhi in spite of Gandhi's critical opinions over the Japanese army's aggression against China.
