Abstract

The purpose of this research is to clarify the relationship of clients and knowledge. The research question is what effect breadth and depth of client relationships have on organizational knowledge. To answer the questions, this research considers the composition of organizations’ clients as a portfolio. According to an empirical analysis of 100 patent law firms in Japan, the following three points are supported: (1) The wider client portfolio contributes to the broader knowledge portfolio; (2) concentrating on major clients leads to a deep knowledge portfolio; and (3) concentrating on major clients broaden a knowledge portfolio but the wider client portfolio does not deepen it.
