Abstract

Since 1501 Emperor Go-Kashiwabara had regularly held the meeting for reading poems on the first of January. But as the political conditions became more unstable, fewer nobles could afford to participate in the New Year ceremony. In response to this critical situation the emperor gave up convening the meeting and instead asked the noble poets to send their works to the court every month. In such a flexible manner the court managed to continue its function as a literary center in the midst of the disturbance of the transitional period.
