• Study on Air Permeability Patchwork Ski Jumping Suit

抄録

The aerodynamic characteristics of the sports suit play an important role in the victory or defeat of sports. Furthermore, the fluid forces acing on the body of the player are influenced by a surface shape of the cloth for suit, a position or the fastener, and the air permeability. Therefore, a wind tunnel examination and numerical analysis for the design of the suit greatly contributes to these sports. Ski jumping is a sport which competes the flight distance and the flight form, and jumpers attempt to fly as far as possible. The fabric used in ski jumping plays an important role to obtain aerodynamic benefits. In the regulations for ski jumping competition, the outstretched fabric must show a medium air permeability of a minimum of 40 L/m2/sec with 10 mm water pressure. However, the effect of the air permeability of ski jumping suits on aerodynamic characteristics has not been completely clarified yet. The purpose of this study is to investigate the effect of air permeability of jumping suit fabric on aerodynamic characteristics, and four types of fabric with different air permeability are considered from aerodynamic point of view. The wind tunnel experiments were carried out using the fabric clothed elliptic cylinder and the aerodynamic forces acting on the elliptic cylinder were measured by using a tow-component force balance. Furthermore, visualization of the flow field around the test model by smoke-wire. The experimental results show that the drag forces decrease with increasing the air permeability and the stall performance was greatly affected by the air permeability. The stall delay occurs for the fabric with high air permeability. It was presumed that the aerodynamic performance of ski jumpers can be improved by using the suit fabric with different air permeability at each part of the body.
