Abstract

The objective of this research is to investigate the near infrared spectral reflectance characteristics and detection feasibility from the satellite for detecting plastic garbage on the coast. The plastic materials such as plastic bottles, plastic bags, non plastic materials such as bottles and cardboard, backgrounds such as sand and earth Spectral reflectance was measured for substances in indoor and outdoor (including actual coast) using a portable spectral radiometer capable of measuring radiation in the visible to near infrared (350 nm to 2500 nm). Representative plastic garbage absorption bands (1100-1250 nm, 1600-1800 nm, 2100-2350 nm) were revealed. In the outdoor spectral reflectance experiments, we clarified the inconsistent bands (1350-1420 nm and 1800-1970 nm) due to weak sunlight. The feasibility of wide area plastic garbasge detection by NDSI (Normalized Difference Spectral Index) method using Band 11 and Band 12 of satellite Sentinel-2 was shown.
