- Microswimmer: Self-Propulsion Mechanism by Electroosmotic Flow
抄録

Self-propelled microswimmers have significant potential for medical applications. The most important technical challenge is to realize an energy supply mechanism functioning inside the human body and a propulsion mechanism suitable for micro/nanoscale fluids. Our concept uses biofuel cell (BFC) and electroosmotic propulsion (EOP). The BFC mechanism has two electrodes and can generates an open-circuit potential (OCP) between them by redox reactions of biofuels. The EOP mechanism has an insulating tube between the electrodes. Electroosmotic flow (EOF) is generated inside the tube by the electric force from the OCP. A reaction force then propels its body. We derived a theoretical model of the propulsion velocity, suggesting that a smaller body would have a greater velocity.
