Abstract

This study discussed bicycle safety at large intersections by movement analysis based on video survey results at three signalized intersections in Japan. First, we conducted correlation analysis between cyclist risky behaviors, intersection geometries and the timing of traffic signal. It is found that the cyclists tend to pass through at outside of crosswalk when the angle of left turn is large or the angle of crosswalk is small. Second, we analyzed traffic conflicts between bicycles and left/ right turning vehicles by using PET index. It is revealed that frequency of traffic conflicts between cyclists and left-turning vehicles varies by both object crosswalk and divided area, on the other hand, there is no statistically significant difference about the frequency of traffic conflicts between bicycles and right-turning vehicle. Third, we conducted discriminant analyses for risky traffic situations near/at crosswalks. It is shown that the setback distance of crosswalk and the elapsed time when the cyclists enter the conflict area are related to occur the severe traffic conflicts between bicycles and turning vehicles. Finally, we conducted sensitivity analyses for developed discriminant models and confirmed the effect of several safety countermeasures at large intersections.
