Abstract

Based on the recognition of the adverse effect of promoting compact cities that the population isolated from shopping facilities will increase, this study aims to prove that levelling the population density will make shopping facilities accessible to every citizen.
The increase in citizens isolated from shopping facilities due to the aging population has been analyzed and discussed from the viewpoint of population density and the location of grocery stores. For each city the population densities (Areas without residents have been excluded) in suburban residential areas with potential increase in citizen isolated from shopping facilities has been compared. When the population density becomes ≤60 persons per hectare, more than 50 percent of the entire area will become areas with citizens isolated from shopping facilities. If the population density throughout urbanization promotion areas can be levelled, shopping facilities become accessible to every citizen.
