Abstract
Although cancer can develop in adolescents and young adults (AYA) (aged from 15 to 29 years), measures against AYA cancer have been delayed due to their rarity. Also, there are specific problems related to such cases, e.g., regarding schooling, work, marriage, and pregnancy, which need resolving. We took positive steps towards the treatment of cancer in AYA at Showa University Fujigaoka Hospital, but we did not solve these problems. In April 2017, we established a Pediatric・AYA Cancer Center at our hospital to solve these problems and comprehensively treat both childhood cancer and cancer affecting AYA. Furthermore, the Pediatric・AYA Cancer Center governing board was created to facilitate cooperation among doctors, nurses, clinical psychologists, and caseworkers during the treatment of cancer in AYA. At the Pediatric・AYA Center, information about AYA with cancer and their medical problems is shared. We plan to establish a study room, where patients can study in a quiet environment, and a relaxation room, where patients can gather. To provide learning support for high school students, the dispatch of teachers to patient bedsides was arranged in cooperation with the Yokohama City authorities. We try to tackle fertility problems in cooperation with both our hospital and other institutions. A medical care system that addresses the needs of AYA with cancer was developed at the pediatric・AYA Cancer Center. We will try to further improve this care in future.
