Abstract

A novel iminodiacetic acid chelating resin Hym-I was prepared by modification of a crosslinked polyvinylamine resin, which was prepared by suspension polymerization of N-vinylformamide in the presence of divinylbenzene and acrylonitrile followed by hydrolysis. Production of the crosslinked polyvinylamine resin and of Hym-I bearing iminodiacetic acid groups was confirmed by FT-IR spectroscopy. In metal adsorption tests using Hym-I and a commercially available chelate adsorbent DIAION™ CR11, Hym-I showed lower adsorption of trivalent metal ions under acidic conditions, which results in high selectivity to Cu(II) over the trivalent metal ions. Maximum adsorption capacity of Hym-I for Cu(II) calculated by the Langmuir equation was 3.70 mmol/g, which was 1.8 times that of CR11.
