Abstract

In order to consider the support needed to continue living at home, the wishes of children (persons) with severe motor and intellectual disabilities (SMID) and their caregivers regarding where they would like to live in the future, were clarified. A questionnaire survey targeting children (persons) with SMID throughout Japan who were registered at the office of daily activity assistance for SMID and received day care, and their caregivers, was carried out. Responses were received from 626 persons. From the results, most caregivers were mothers in their 50s, and the average age of children (persons) with SMID was 28.2 years. Approximately half of the caregivers wished to continue providing care at home in the future, and this was especially seen in cases in the Shikoku region where the child (person) with SMID was relatively young and medical care was required. In order for such persons to continue to live at home, services such as short term stays, living assistance, and home care are needed. Specifically, increasing the number of offices for short term stays, utilization of living assistance on holidays, and implementation of medical care by a home helper were desired. In addition, a strong desire for the improvement in the knowledge and skills of the staff handling children (persons) with SMID, regardless of the services rendered, was indicated.
