Abstract

Measurement and analysis of hand motions are important to improve work efficiency and reduce physical burden. However, it is difficult to measure the fingers’ movement without restricting their mobility. The purpose of this study was the development of a hand motion measuring system using inertial sensors. To decide the position and number of sensors, the shape and displacement of the hand during movement were measured for six subjects, using optical motion capture. From this data, we developed a measurement system with twenty inertial sensors: one on each finger phalanx, two on the back of the hand, and three on the wrist plate. Three rigid hand division models were developed from that data and compared using the developed and optical systems. As a result, the most accurate model was shown to be a rigid body model divided into two parts. One part includes the MP joints of the index and middle fingers and the CM joints of the thumb, ring, and pinky fingers, as well as the wrist. The other part includes the pinky finger side of the hand. Using this system and model, it is possible to measure motions where the five fingers are in contact with an object. Therefore, we developed the measuring system and model that can measure various finger motions without motion restriction.
